Fundamentals of Coaching / Training

  1. A coach can guide you on the path, but your success ultimately depends on your own determination.
  2. The goal of coaching and following a training plan is to achieve success. If your current plan is not working, change it, not your goal.
  3. To perform to your potential, you must prepare for every possible outcome, which means practicing regularly.
  4. Interview coaches who align with your experience, needs, and goals to determine what you need for success.
  5. Instead of letting your desires dictate your training, follow an adaptation-driven model.
  6. Periodization is a model where volume and intensity vary based on the athlete’s experience and goals.
  7. Progressive overload is the principle of continually and increasingly challenging the body to become stronger and faster.
  8. Periodization allows athletes to focus on specific types of fitness adaptation at specific times of the season, leading to overall fitness improvement.
  9. Enjoying training can boost performance and help you reach your goals faster.
  10. The most important variables in triathlon training are training volume and intensity.
  11. The total volume of training is the sum of frequency and duration.
  12. Each training goal should be approached individually with the athlete’s best interests in mind.
  13. There is no single formula that works in every situation; instead, consider the rider’s fitness, event type, and time available to train.
  14. Planning your season, including macrocycles, key events, and periods of reset and recovery, is essential for success.
  15. Training should be planned around life, including family, work, sleep, and fun.
  16. Training intensity and metrics should be balanced with self-awareness and the ability to manage what the day throws at you.
  17. Success in training is achieved through understanding the intent of each workout and having a dynamic mindset.
  18. To be a successful athlete, you need to train SMART, not just hard.
  19. The barometer of success is not just checking the training box or training a certain number of hours per week but hitting key sessions and having a dynamic mindset.
