I signed up for the Mystery Mountain 12 miles just a few days ago, craving the chance to run in the mountains with fall weather and t felt like the perfect opportunity. The last time I was here was just before I broke my patella while training for an April 2023 event. A lot has changed since then, but being back stirred up a mix of familiarity and excitement.
The energy of the running community never fails to amaze me. From the moment I arrived, I was surrounded by supportive and enthusiastic people. I reconnected with old friends who inspire me and met new faces who share the same love for trails and endurance running.
There’s something powerful about being around others who are drawn to the same challenges—it reminded me why I love this sport and these events.
It was the longest trail run I’ve done since surgery, 82 weeks ago, and I entered it hoping to assess where both my body and mind stand as I think about my future goals.
Before my injury, I had my sights set on longer distances, like 50K – 50-milers, Today’s run was about seeing if those ambitions are still on the table for 2025.
To my surprise, I felt amazing. My pace was steady, and I even felt like I could have gone further. At one point, I found myself wishing I’d signed up for the marathon that was happening alongside the race! But I reminded myself this was about testing limits, not pushing them. I let runners pass, stopped to take in the stunning views, and simply enjoyed being out there without the pressure to perform.
Despite my relaxed approach, I still managed to make the podium—a completely unexpected but exciting result. It’s a reminder of how unpredictable race days can be and how sometimes, things just fall into place.
Huge thanks to the race director and all the incredible volunteers who made this event so smooth. Their hard work and positive energy kept me going, and I’m grateful for the experience they created.
This race gave me clarity. It reignited my passion for long-distance running and confirmed that I’m ready to start chasing bigger goals again.
I feel confident that I can get back to where I was—and, more then anything, today reminded me of the importance of community, patience, and embracing the journey.
The technical terrain really tested me, but my training on similar course terrain gave me a solid foundation. highlighted my weak spot of mine and something I’ll need to keep working on.
This race was a huge step forward, both physically and mentally. I feel encouraged by the strength I’ve built, and I’m eager to continue preparing for those longer distances I want to tackle.
