From Camey I knew about t2 coaching because Wendy is my sister, but I had the privilege of seeing her in action when I went with her to Turkey, where she was coaching a number of athletes. Now I have been on swim teams and such with different coaches but watching her with this group was something special to see. The “turkeys” we called them with affection, loved her with a genuineness that could not be faked. It was equally matched by her being genuine. She was herself, did not come at them from “Mount coach”, she was herself with her enthusiasm for coaching apparent.
After I lost my husband I decided that training for triathlons was a good idea just to not be consumed by my loss and grief. Naturally I asked her to coach me. What I liked was that we morphed in and out of being my sister and as my coach. I was treated the same as her other athletes she was coaching. MyI expectations for myself were low. The reality was a bit different. After an injury made running difficult I competed in aqua bike races. I ended up being in the top 15 of my age group nationally. I was a swimmer growing up, but biking was new to me. We talked about my training often. Had to trust that she knew what she was doing. She most certainly did. One thing that I really appreciated was that she was always available to answering questions or addressing concerns, big or small. She knew that emotional factors could effect performance, and she made it easy and comfortable to talk about personal issues. I suppose you could say that she has a “wholistic” approach to coaching.
Wendy also practices what she preaches. For example when she is racing she will not quit when her performance is lower than she expected. After her win in 2008 I was concerned how she would reach if the win was not repeated. Her reaction is always the same as with the win no matter how she performs. For every experience she has as an athlete she uses to make herself a better coach.
You could say that I wrote the above with bias being family. Hire her as your coach and you can see for yourself.
